On the Moon

On the Moon

Without Contraries is no progression. – William Blake

We’ve been feeling – a lot – this autumn. We can feel the world changing and it can feel by turns exhilarating, terrifying, exhausting and confusing.

Today’s Gemini Full Moon empowers us to think rationally about everything we’ve felt over the last two or three lunar cycles – and, indeed, the last year. This is a valuable gift, because we are thinking beings and the overall perspective or philosophy we hold in mind is crucial to our ability to make the best choices in the current energetic cauldron. However, we may have to wait a day or two to fully understand the ideas and inspirations we’ve been receiving yesterday and today.

Gemini is the sign that most expresses the duality of embodied life on Earth. I think it’s a natural human instinct to crave truth – or at least a believable perspective – and the security it brings. This is the promise of Sagittarius, where the Sun and Saturn (authority, structure) are currently hanging out together.

But too much Sagittarian “truth” can easily turn into dogma. Think about it: Trump good + Hillary crooked = security. Trump only cares about money/himself + Hillary cares about children and the environment = security. Now I’m part of the red herd or the blue herd. My mind’s made up. I don’t have to think any more. And, crucially, I believe myself absolved of responsibility. If my side wins, I was right all along. If their side wins, well, it’s not my fault.

This looks like a very positive Full Moon, with the Sun, Moon and Saturn all making stellar aspects to Mars in Aquarius (energizing new visions of human society) and Jupiter in Libra (win-win collaboration; fair and balanced relationships). But it may present us with a paradox or two.

The ability to hold apparently conflicting options in consciousness without prematurely grasping at one or the other may very well lead to a synthesis or hidden truth that provides a transcendent solution.

Here’s the rest of Blake’s verse, from the Marriage of Heaven and Hell:

Without Contraries is no progression. Attraction and Repulsion, Reason and Energy, Love and Hate, are necessary to Human existence.
